Cat College
Friday, Dec. 12, 2014 - 09:11

Instead of anything, here's a story about Cat College that I'm making up right now.

It was the first day of the semester at Cat College and Whiska sauntered into her 9 a.m. class, Survey of American Literature. She wasn't looking forward to this class - she hated talking about literature with other cats - but it was a requirement for her major. She'd attempted to take the class twice in previous semesters but had dropped it both times. This was her last year, so she had to get through the class this time.

The professor was Madame Honeybutt, a strict and cranky old medium hair tabby with golden eyes and a matted tail. Whiska had heard terrible things about Madame Honeybutt, that she didn't get along with other cats and was impossible to please. Whiska was a straight-A student but wondered if she'd be able to manage a C in this class.

Whiska sat down in the back of the room next to a large orange cat named Tom. She had seen Tom around campus before but had never talked to him. She knew some of his friends, though - tough cats who had grown up on the streets - and had heard rumors that Tom was friendly with dogs.

Tom didn't seem in a friendly mood this morning. He was twitching his tail and staring intently out the window at the birds in the trees. Whiska looked at her syllabus and flattened her ears back. The course started with the Puritans and ended with the theologians and political theorists. Madame Honeybutt seemed to be celebrating American literature as the dreariest of subjects. Students were required to compose critical responses to each work they read, and the semester was capped off with a debate about the influences of predestination on literary technique.

Madame Honeybutt was perched on a shelf in a front corner hissing and growling. Whiska wondered why Madame Honeybutt had taken a job that required interaction with other cats when it was clear that she didn't get along with other cats.

Madame Honeybutt yowled to get everyone's attention. Whiska knew it was going to be a long semester.
